Kungsleden (the Kings Trail), a 450 km trial through Lapland in northern Sweden, passing through several national parks, a unesco world heritage site, and a swedish national treasure. While this spectacular route is usually backpacked or skied, Krissy Moehl, Luke Nelson and I are going to trail running the northern section of this trail. After a couple of months of planning and prep work it's finally happening.

Over next week, we are running from Vakkotavare to Abikso, via Kebnekaise. Running hut to hut allows us to go super light, carrying only the bare necessities, and purchasing the food we need at the huts along the way. I'm shooting stills, and we will be posting updates when we get cell service along the way. follow #runthekingstrail and #swedishlapland for our feed. OR shoot in the Cascades

 

Last spring I had the opportunity to travel to the Cascades for a Ski Mountaineering adventure with my old friend Martin Volken and Forest McBrian. Our goal was to ski and climb around Sahale Peak, in the Forbidden Peak zone, and generate still and motion images for Outdoor Research. The motion content from the field in this video, along with a few images in this OR blog post are some of the visuals that resulted - more to come.

100 Miles High

"100 miles and 33,000 feet of vertical gain over high alpine terrain on foot."

Every year, in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, 140 elite ultra runners test themselves against one of the worlds hardest running challenges. The Hardrock 100 ultra marathon consists of over 33,000 ft of elevation gain through some of the most rugged and unforgiving alpine terrain in the United States. For Darcy Piceu Africa, this race is a mental and physical battle that challenges her to push through boundaries in ways she never thought possible. This film documents the the challange of the 2013 Hardrock through Darcy's experience, as she takes on the San Juans and attempts to defend her title and become back-to-back Hardrock champion. 

I was on location to document Darcy's attempt to win back to back titles at the 2013 race in Silverton - this was my 4th straight year shooting hardrock, but the first time covering this incredible race in motion instead of stills. Huge shout out to my collaborators, co-producers, editors, and soundtrack producers at Lt11, as well as many thanks to Darcy, Krissy, Matt and Karl for starring in the film. Invernada In-Nirvana - Backcountry Magazine Photo Essay

Donny Roth skiing late afternoon corn in Chile this fall.

This past septmeber I had the oppurtunity to join dynafit athlete and ski guide Donny Roth (Chile Powder Adventures) and Backcountry Magazine writer Tyler Cohen for an adventure in a remote corner of the Cordillera Blanca in Chile. Our plan was to get into the high peaks of a seldom visited range that Donny had scouted, and traverse the area over 8 days and see what kind of ski terrain might be hiding back there. With a lower then average snow pack, and some grim updates on conditions from Donny who spends the summers in Chile, I think we all considered pulling the plug on this trip... good thing we did not and went for it. As is almost always the case with trips into the mountains, when in doubt - go higher! Good thing Donny has the logistics in Chile totally dialed, as getting access turned out to be one of the cruxes of the trip.

We want Lumpy! Lumpy waters, sea kayaking symposium on the Oregon Coast - always a great time! This year the weather gods offered up some rowdy surf (sea states?!), rain, some short lived and unexpected sunshine and just great paddling. My 2nd year attending lumpy, last year to shoot photos, and this year to shoot video - hope you enjoy. Thanks to all the students, coaches and the crew at Alder Creek in Portland.
