Sunrise over the Elks. A lifetime worth of inspiring ski mountaineering!
Among the many worthy objectives is Capitol peak, a fourteener with a fierce reputation and probably the crux for most folks that are going for skiing all Colorados 14ers. After what seemed like a one-in-a-million weather forecast, I got out yesterday with Ted, Christy and Joey to give this burly peak a go. Above, the route of choice for our group. Approximate climbing and skiing line follows the marks.
Ted and Christy Mahon are all smiles on the summit of Capitol - after some scary climbing. I think I'm still puckering...
The business starts right of the summit with an airy traverse over the cliffs of the south face to get over to the east face proper. Christy cruising right along.
After working through the upper east face, it is mostly linking together sporty traversing with a few turns. Joey leads the way towards the hidden couloir, relative safety and relief! With this descent in the bag, Christy completed her quest to ski all the 14ers, and becomes the first women known to do so. Congratulations!
Nice! Not sure I would have appreciated the spooky way up but the run definitely seemed to be worth it!
